Meet the Creators

Mediated Culture is a student-run digital media outlet covering diversity issues in the media. This is part of entrepreneurship of the course Multiculturalism and the Media. Students are challenged to not only critically analyze social issues and inequality in the media but also materialize the multicultural/critical theories into practice and media production.

Using all the theories and practical skills covered in this class, the students produce media contents that serve to educate the public about social issues concerning marginalized social groups. When browsing this website, please keep in mind that they are the work created by college students who aspire to become media practitioners. Suggestions and criticisms are welcome and would be greatly appreciated. However, please send your feedback to the supervisor (mli16@lsu.edu) rather than the students.

Deon Sumer

My name is Deon Sumer and I am excited to say that this is my last semester of college! I am looking forward to this class among others this semester that concentrate on what I am interested in. Writing has always been my strong point and favorite activity throughout school (other than talking too much). Therefore, I'm especially looking forward to this class. There aren't many other opportunities throughout college to get to write about very relevant hot-button topics, like this. I'm most looking forward to hearing differing opinions from my classmates in hopes to expand my horizon... there's so many opinions out there! I currently am the general manager of Southern Oaks Athletic Club, which takes up the majority of my time outside of school. Though I am not sure what my career after college will be, this class will bring me one step closer to it!
