Great takeaways, Cynthea. I think that’s also why Obama’s presidency was considered as a threat to the American national identity–White hypermasculinity.

See, you know it perfectly!! “Different levels of masculinity” is subordinate masculinity 🙂
I also like your reflection on how the seemingly accepting audience of the shows like LSB is not actually accepting if the performers don’t do back to their original persona. -

Good point! Hegemonic masculinity is unattainable for most people. No matter how well one performs masculinity, their sexuality, class, and race would always to taken into consideration to discredit their gender performance.

I’ve never watched Lip Sync Battle, but it’s interesting how the hosts make it a point to reiterate the fact that the participants who are cross-dressing are most definitely heterosexual.
Also I’ve been to a few roller derbys before and it’s incredible to watch because it’s so unique and unlike anything else and the women are such badasses. but…[Read more]

Gendered Anger After the Election
“U.S. culture often demonstrates deep contempt for traditionally feminine values. … In the value system most prevalent in those politics, striving for coalition is weak, seeking collaboration is lame, and aiming for cooperation in condemnable.”I thought this was a really interesting analysis of the Biden memes…[Read more]

1. I watch the lip sync battle show and I never really thought that deeply into it. But now, I realize that it probably plays a large role in breaking the strict boundary between male and female in the show’s constant cross-dressing. Which is amazing how deeply T.V. can affect everyday life and standards.
2. “Because of gayness being tied c…[Read more] -

1. There are some men who cannot align with hegemonic masculinity due to their marginalization including including race, social class, etc.
2. Gay men in sports feel pressured to adhere to hegemonic masculine ideals by not showing emotion and still acting like “tough guys.”
3. Being gay automatically expels you from hegemonic masculinity because…[Read more] -

1. Gender may or may not depend on biological traits. Gender encompasses the cultural meanings attached to what it means to be a man or woman. Gender involves norms created by society that dictate which activities are more appropriate for one sex over the other. These norms stem from what society deems as “masculine” or “feminine.” However, sex…[Read more]

Using the examples of Shape Magazine and Men’s Health Magazine, we can observe the differences in the language, photos, and overall messages of these magazines and how that plays into the dichotomy of femininity and masculinity. In Shape, the emphasis is placed on weight loss and beauty while Men’s Health speaks more about overall fitness and…[Read more]

It surprised me that entrenched gender inequality is a product of modernity. Zevallos says, “it’s not that inequality did not exist before, it’s that inequality within the home in relation to family life was not as pronounced.” People talk about “how much better it is” for women in today’s society but I didn’t realize that such ingrained unequ…[Read more]

1. Our ideas of gender are a social construct enforced by society from the time we are born.
2. Gender and sex are two different things. Sex is the biological traits a person is born with that assign them to being either male or female. Gender are the roles and traits that society imposes on men and women. Blue for boys, pink for girls. Cars and…[Read more]

There exists a social order power dynamic designed based on socially constructed ideas of sex and gender characteristics. This gender order is maintained in the context of masculinity vs. femininity. Within masculinity and feminist, there are further divisions that illustrate and perpetuate this social power dynamic. Hegemonic masculinity embodies…[Read more]

1) Lip Sync Battle (LSB) is a show on Spike that is helping launch a rebrand of the network to include more women viewers. 4) An additional takeaway I took was, “As seen in the Biden memes, the Vice-President is part alpha-male badass, part ill-behaved manbaby.” I thought this was humorous and understandable because seeing the vice president in this manner makes him oddly more approachable and respectable.

1) “U.S. culture often demonstrates deep contempt for traditionally feminine values.” This is particularly interesting because the U.S. as a whole doesn’t value women, so for it it to have traditional feminine values is kind of sad. Because the U.S. doesn’t value it’s own demonstrated values.
