Great takeaways, Cynthea. I think that’s also why Obama’s presidency was considered as a threat to the American national identity–White hypermasculinity.

See, you know it perfectly!! “Different levels of masculinity” is subordinate masculinity 🙂
I also like your reflection on how the seemingly accepting audience of the shows like LSB is not actually accepting if the performers don’t do back to their original persona. -

Great explication of the relationship of hegemonic masculinity and emphasized femininity 🙂

Good point! Hegemonic masculinity is unattainable for most people. No matter how well one performs masculinity, their sexuality, class, and race would always to taken into consideration to discredit their gender performance.

Excellent, excellent takeaways, Ellen!
It’s great that you bring up “post-racial society” and acknowledge that it is “blatantly untrue.”
“Post-racial” and “post-feminist” are no doubt useful terms for people to advance the conversation about inequality, but they are also used to romanticize the current state of equality and reject the…[Read more] -

Excellent point, Sheridan.
Racial proximity, indeed, reflects how socially constructed race really is.
Most importantly, it shows the regulative power of race – how it regulate people’s life from daily interaction, DMV treatment, marriage, to children/parenting from multiracial families. -

Great takeaways, Kathy!
It’s particularly interesting that you mention ” and on a daily life, cultural-political level, people just don’t really see the difference in self-identification by race and self-identification by ethnicity.” -

Great takeaways, Destiny!!
Yes, race is indeed a made-up political concept that serves the goals and maintains the unequal social order. It’s highly contextually fluid.
Also, it’s great that when we talk about White Privilege, it’s not personal (or personal attack/blaming), we are talking about a systemic inequality/problems at a societal level. -

Excellent, excellent job with the takeaways, Ellen!
Race is indeed a taken-for-granted creation of the United States, while “racism” exists in different shapes and forms. We are going to talk about the nuance later this semester 🙂
You are right about the impact of White privilege, particularly in media representation. In the United States, Race…[Read more] -

Excellent points, Maddie!
Glad that you tap into the nuance in how men’s support for women’s rights is limited.
Also, it’s very important that you notice while class is a privilege itself, white privilege delivers the advantages that are more pervasive and unearned that are based on skin color. -
